One of the biggest decisions that parents need to make when expecting a new bundle of joy is choosing the right car seat. Very often this can be an extremely overwhelming decision with so many different choices and options available on the market. Do you go for an Isofix car seat or a belted seat? Is your car Isofix compatible? What does Isofix even mean? Do you go for a newborn car seat, a multi-stage car seat or a car seat and pram combo? Do you switch your little one to forward facing or do you invest in the extended rear-facing car seat? The questions and concerns surrounding car seats and car seat safety can seem never ending.
In addition to the already overwhelming prospect of choosing the right car seat, child car safety takes on a whole new dynamic for South African parents. Our roads are a minefield of potholes and taxis. We’re in and out of our cars at least 5 times a day if not more. A ‘quick’ trip to the store means at least a 5-to-10-minute drive. South African parents need to place a high priority on both extreme safety as well as on ease of use in getting your little one in and out of the car as quickly and easily as possible.
So how do you make the right decision when choosing your little one’s car seat? How do you find the perfect combination of safety and convenience? There are organizations that can help you make this delicate decision a bit easier. Their accurate assessment tests, which include crash tests and stress car seats in various ways until a final verdict and safety rating is reached. The most important among these independent impartial bodies is the ICRT (International Consumer Report & Testing), which combines 37 organizations in 33 countries worldwide. Among them, the ADAC, TCS and OAMTC. Every year these organizations select a group of car seats that they independently test.
Tests are carried out according to 4 categories: Safety, Handling, Ergonomics and Pollutants. Quality standards are very high; the final grade is the average of the results in the 4 categories, considering that the Safety category has the greatest influence on the result.
